Broken Promises: The 2008 Olympics and the
Human Rights Situation inChina
Dear Colleague:
Please join the Congressional Human Rights Caucus for a briefing on the state of human rights in the People’s Republic of China at 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22, in 2200 Rayburn HOB. This event is open to the public and the media.
When the International Olympic Committee (IOC) bestowed the honor of hosting the 2008 Summer Olympics on China seven years ago, it was contingent on the promises of the Chinese government to improve freedom of the press and human rights conditions. Instead, we have seen the Chinese government unleash a harsh crackdown on political and religious activity that the communist regime perceives to be a threat to stability.
To discuss this important issue we welcome the following experts:
Douglas Groeb, staff director, Congressional-Executive China Commission
Sophie Richardson, advocacy director, Asia Division, Human Rights Watch
Bob Fu, president, China Aid Association
Alim Seytoff, general director of the Uyghur American Association
Ray Sharpe, Businessman and Chinese Cultural Exchange Expert
Lodi Gyari, TENTATIVE, special envoy to the Dalai Lama
We look forward to your participation in this important briefing. If you have any questions, please call Elizabeth Hoffman at 225-5136 or Hans Hogrefe at 225-5021.
Sincerely,
Frank R. Wolf James P. McGovern

China’s abuses to their own orphans at this time is appalling. They are kicking out the western orphanage caretakers so that China will save face when the games take place. That is that they will be seen as taking care of their own and not the western people taking care of the children. It sounds good but they are unable to take care of the 1.8 million orphans and are hurting the orphans by kicking out the western help.

“Dear” Democrat and Repulican members on the Congressional Human Rights Causus:
Please show just a little bit of class and respond with action to the people who will be testifying today. Now and then it is sort of nice to set aside your petty politicing and stand up for what is “right!”
