Rights Defenders in China

Since 2004, a group of lawyers, legal scholars as well as human rights activists started a movement known as “Weiquan Yundong” which means rights defending movement. They used their legal expertise and other knowledge to help those Chinese citizens whose constitutional rights including rights of religious freedom, freedom of assembly and press were abused by the authorities. They launched civil disobedient activities. They used their pens, internet blogs, judicial procedures to fight for their rights and the rights of the millions of abused citizens. As a result, millions of Chinese people have got a free civil rights education. And of course, these rights defenders have been paying heavy price. Some were arrested, some were sentenced, some were tortured. Family members including children are constantly harassed, intimidated, followed by the secret police. But like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., their dream will come true ONE DAY…
