(Beijing — May 15, 2008) CAA learned two PSB officer from Beijing broke into a House Church prayer service in Haidian District at 7:30pm on May 15, 2008 Beijing Time. Eyewitness reports that while about a dozen of house church believers were gathering and praying for the victims of the Sichuan earthquake and for Beijing Olympics at the home of renown Beijing Christian rights defender Dr Fan Yafeng, two PSB officers rushed in and declared that meeting as ‘illegal gathering.” The PSB officers demanded every believer there to register their ID number. After Dr. Fan, a China Constitutional law scholar working as a researcher at China Academy of Social Sciences, defended the believers’ rights to worship freely guaranteed by China’s Constitution and international law, the two PSB officers left without obtaining any ID number from the believers.
Sources told CAA, as part of pre-Olympics clean-up effort, the Beijing government is planning to launch a severe crackdown campaign by declaring all unregistered house churches as ‘illegal” on June 1, 2008.
