(Tianjin—Nov. 16, 2019) Authorities have not released Beijing church elder Hu Shigen on medical parole despite promising to do so a year ago.

Hu, a human rights proponent, was taken into police custody on July 10, 2015, as China conducted a large sweep of activists across the country. In 2016, a Tianjin court convicted him of “subversion of state power,” using a photo of his baptism as evidence in his trial. He was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison.

While in prison, Hu suffered from a variety of health complications, including a heart attack. Authorities promised his family that he would be released on medical parole.

Believing confessing to his crime would get him the necessary medical release, Hu pled guilty during his trial. However, officials still refuse to release him, denying the family’s petitions.
