(BEJING — Dec. 15, 2010) ChinaAid collected a chronicle of incidents of persecution suffered by Holy Mountain (Shengshan) Cultural Research Institute since October 2010:
October 19: In the afternoon, Brother Dai Jinbo was taken to Shuangyushu Police Station and his identification was seized. He was not released until 7 p.m.
October 20: At 6:30 a.m., all those who participated in a seminar organized by the institute were barred from entering the building. They were later allowed to enter after some negotiation.
At 7:30 a.m., they summoned Brother Fan Yafeng. By 7:40 a.m., over 30 military police officers had arrived. They raided the seminary and ended the morning prayer. The people attending the seminary were dispersed. Brother Fan Yafeng was not released until 4:30 p.m.
October 24: In the afternoon, a believer was attempting to attend the Sunday worship service at Shengshan Church when he was barred from entering at the corridor near the door of the building. It was only after he protested that he was finally allowed to enter. The gathering was not disrupted.
October 27: In the evening, copies of Issue 15 of Shengshan Magazine were seized and officers began to hunt down some of the workers. After that, they questioned Cui, the producer of Issue 6 of Shengshan Magazine, and whose company was searched back in 2008.
October 30: At 9:30 a.m., to prevent Shengshan Institute from holding its meeting in the afternoon, the authorities summoned Fan Yafeng, claiming that he was disturbing the peace. To prevent others from seeing what was happening, they checked Fan Yafeng into Shuangyushu Hotel and did not release him until 6:00 p.m.
During this time, the Domestic Security Protection Squad of Haidian Public Security Bureau (PSB) told him that all activities and Christian gatherings that take place in the office of Shengshan Institute and at the residence of Fan Yafeng were banned. There was no notification given in writing.
(On October 31, Shengshan Church went on with their usual Sunday gathering as planned. The meeting was attended by 11 adults and children.)
In the afternoon, lawyer Xie Yanyi was roughed up by four or five people dressed in police uniform while en route to attend a meeting at Shengshan Institute. His belongings were searched as well.
A student from China Youth University for Political Sciences was picked up and brought back by the president of the university. Mr. Li Hai was taken away by four policemen, and his whereabouts are still unknown.
November 1: Brother Fan Yafeng was barred from leaving his home.
November 2: Sister Wu from Shengshan Institute was forcibly searched when she intended to enter Shengshan Institute with a box of books. In the meantime, police have installed an iron gate downstairs from Fan Yafeng’s residence at Shuangyushu to better monitor him.
On the same day, Lawyer Xie Yanyi went to Shuangyushu Police Station to ask for some information on the police officers who abused their power. Preliminary results have shown that the police officers who are suspected of abusing the personal rights of Xie on October 30 were Zhang Jiabin, political commissar of Shuangyushu Police Station with a police number of 035981 and the police officer Guo Wanqing with the police number 036817.
Two or three other people in plain clothes have not been identified.
November 7: From 4 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., the Mantingfang Sunday gathering at Shengshan Church was raided. Two police officers raided the gathering and summoned Fan Yafeng after charging him with disturbing the peace.
November 24: From 9 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. on the next day, Fan Yafeng, his wife Wu Lingling and their 3-year-old son were summoned because they allegedly engaged in activities in the name of a social organization. Their keys and cell phones were confiscated.
The next day, it was confirmed that at least four computers and an iPad were in use between 10 p.m. on November 24 to 1 a.m. the next morning during the absence of the entire Fan family.
Since December 4, Fan Yafeng’s wife and his mother-in-law have been stalked and everything they do has been closely monitored. Every package sent through the mail must be examined by the police — even toys are not exempt from the search.
From November 5, Wu Lingling’s cousin, lawyer Wu Chenglian, has not been allowed to enter their residence. Fan Yafeng and his Shengshan team have been under continued suppression since October 8.
Since October 19, Fan Yafeng has been summoned four times and his wife and their 3-year-old son have been summoned once. Shengshan magazines have been searched and seized, their seminar was raided and subsequently banned, and their Sunday worship services have been raided.
Fan Yafeng has been barred from leaving his residence and under house arrest since November 1; he is not even allowed to leave for meals or engage in other activities.
December 9th, Fan Yafeng was taken in police custody. Three days after taking Dr. Fan into custody on Dec. 9, police returned to his home on the evening of Sunday Dec. 12 at 8 p.m. and detained his wife Wu Lingling as well, interrogating her until 4 a.m. Monday. When Dr. Fan was taken into custody, she was told that he would be released four days later, but as of Tuesday, he remained in custody.
