(Taipei, Taiwan—Sept. 11, 2015) China Aid founder and President Bob Fu testified before Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan on Monday and participated in a discussion with the city council of Taiwan’s second largest city on Tuesday. Both speaking opportunities focused on the worsening human rights situation in China.
Monday’s hearing before Taiwan’s lawmaking branch, titled “The Collapsing Communist Part Government is Intensifying Persecution of Religious Freedom and Human Rights,” was organized by the Taiwan Association for Human Rights.
Those who testified in the hearing, including Fu and Miss World Canada 2015, Anastasia Lin, focused on four main points:
- Taiwan must expose the wrong-doings perpetrated by the Communist Party of China (CPC).
- Taiwan must respond to human rights and religious freedom abuses occurring in China.
- Taiwan should be based on universal values and should exercise a policy of “The CPC arrests, Taiwan rescues.” Taiwan should further promote the “Refugee Law” and enforce the practice of not allowing Chinese human rights violators to enter the country.
- Taiwan should not establish any new nor participate in existing “Cross-Straight Agreements,” which are intended to facilitate the exchange of goods and services between Taiwan and China.
Fu stated in the hearing that in this time of crisis, Taiwan can’t only focus on its economic relationship with China while ignoring the importance of values and justice.
The legislative hearing was chaired by Ms. Chiu-chin Tien. Also in attendance was Legislator Mei-Nu Yu.
The human rights discussion before the Kaohsuing City Council on Tuesday focused on similar issues as addressed during the hearing before the Legislative Yuan.
Fu and Lin were also interviewed by Radio Taiwan International about human rights abuses and the “Human Rights Fence” blacklist, proposed to keep known abusers from entering Taiwan.
A similar hearing was held in the United States Congress this past July.
