(Washington D. C.—July 27, 2011) ChinaAid Association applauds Congressman Jeff Duncan (R-SC) for introducing an amendment to the FY12 Foreign Relations Authorization Act, a bill to reform U.S. foreign aid, that elevates the importance of international religious freedom in the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Duncan’s amendment requires the U.N. body to conduct a review of refugee-based claims and provide training for its staff on religious freedom so as “to prevent future grief for refugees on religious freedom grounds,” according to a press release from the congressman’s office. The amendment gives the UNHCR 12 months to provide the training and conduct the review.
The religious freedom amendment “was accepted en bloc and passed unanimously,” the press release said. The full text of the amendment is here: http://www.hcfa.house.gov/112/duncan_021.pdf
ChinaAid commends Congressman Duncan for highlighting the importance of the UNHCR appropriately and correctly handling religious freedom cases and for his desire that refugees are not subjected to further trials after fleeing religious persecution in their home countries.
