image(Washington, D.C. – Dec. 5, 2011) On the one-year anniversary of the awarding of the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize to Chinese political prisoner Liu Xiaobo, ChinaAid founder and president Bob Fu has been invited to join other human rights activist and China scholars in testifying before Congress about the ongoing persecution, detention and incarceration of dissidents in China and the impact that the Liu award has had over the past year.

The Congressional-Executive Commission on China is convening the hearing “One Year After the Nobel Peace Prize Award to Liu Xiaobo: Conditions for Political Prisoners and Prospects for Political Reform” on Tuesday Dec. 6.

Pastor Fu is one of eight panelists invited to testify.  He has been asked to speak about his personal experiences as a student leader in the 1989 Tiananmen Square democracy movement and his subsequent house church experience that resulted in the imprisonment of him and his wife in 1996, as well as his work advocating for religious freedom.

He will also give an overview of the worsening religious persecution across China, not just of Christians but of other religious believers as well. Pastor Fu plans to highlight in particular the serious deprivation of religious freedom for certain groups of Chinese citizens, such as prisoners, members of the Chinese Youth League, and those serving in the military.

Pastor Fu has also been asked to comment on the calls for “freedom to assemble” and “freedom of religion” laid out in Charter 08, the treatise for political reform that Liu co-authored and for which he is now serving an 11-year prison sentence, and whether Chinese authorities actually uphold these rights, which are enshrined in the Chinese constitution.

The hearing is scheduled for December 6th from 2 to 4 p.m. at 2172 Rayburn House Office Building. See the CECC website for details: http://www.cecc.gov/pages/hearings/general/hearing2/index.php
