Chinese police torture elderly Christian for 24 hours

(Xi’an, Shanxi province—March 9, 2023) Local police summoned an elderly Christian to fabricate charges against arrested pastors of Xi’an Church of Abundance. Authorities tortured the believer during a 24-hour detention, but he never betrayed the church’s pastors.

Tortured elderly Christian: Brother Wang

Xi’an Church of Abundance referred to the tortured believer as Brother Wang. According to the church, undercover police officers picked up Brother Wang on the morning of March 1. Authorities drove a non-police vehicle to his work and took him to a small hotel. Tying Brother Wang’s hands and feet to a chair, they began threatening him.

Afterwards, police officers named Wei and Zhang interrogated Brother Wang. They momentarily released him from the chair to turn on a camera. However, they quickly cuffed him after they filmed him.

24-hour torture

Brother Wang was tied to the chair for 24 hours. He neither drank water nor slept. Meanwhile, his family searched for him but to no avail. They eventually called the police and learned that Brother Wang was taken away by national security officers of the Chanba Bureau of Public Security. Authorities released Wang on the morning of March 2.

Torture of other Church of Abundance members

Local police tortured many people as they investigated Xi’an Church of Abundance. On August 17, 2022, Xi’an Shilipu Police Station arrested three individuals on “fraud” charges: Pastor Lian Changnian; Pastor Lian Xuliang—Pastor Lian Changnian’s son; and Fu Juan, a church coworker. All three were held under Residential Surveillance at a Designated Location (RSDL). Their families received no notices or updates about them until six months later. Turns out, all three were tortured during their RSDL confinement.

Xi’an Church praying for their persecutors

It is common in mainland China that national security officers and police break laws, abuse power, and even collide with gangsters to arbitrarily violate citizens’ fundamental rights while enforcing laws. The issues are severe in some providences, and Shaanxi is one of them. Nevertheless, Xi’an Abundance Church believes that God is good and kind. They are willing to sacrifice for their faith and intercede for Xi’an police’s law enforcement so that God’s justice can be manifested.
