A Christian Family’s Hard Choice between Water and Faith

China Aid Association
(Xiaoxinjie village, Yunnan – Sept. 14, 2011) The experience of a family in remote China who have been living without running water or electricity for three years due to local government retaliation for their refusal to take part in superstitious practices is but one example of the “soft” persecution that persists across China against Christians, according to ChinaAid sources.
The family of Li De, who are of the Hani minority group in southwest China’s Yunnan province, have been singled out for persecution since Li, 25, refused to take part in the village “dragon worship” activities in 2008. Li, who has been a Christian for 16 years, would not take part in the idol worshipping ceremonies. In retaliation, the local Communist Party secretary ordered the family’s water and electricity turned off.

For the past three years, the family, who live in a remote and impoverished area of the Yi autonomous prefecture, have had to go to a remote mountain stream for water. Water and electricity to his uncle’s house has also been cut off.
Because of the lack of electricity, Li’s children are unable to do their homework, and his mother recently fell in the dark and broke her arm.
Despite repeated appeals by the family, the local officials have refused to restore the family’s water and electricity unless they take part in the “dragon worship” activities.
This is a brazen deprivation of the family’s human rights and their right to freedom of religion. ChinaAid asks Christians around the world to pray for this family, that the Lord would move the relevant officials to restore their water and electricity.
ChinaAid also encourages loving Christians to call or write the family and comfort them:
