(Shenyang, Liaoning—Dec. 15, 2017) A Chinese university in China’s northeastern Liaoning province released a notice forbidding Christmas celebrations and warning young people about being “blindly excited by Western holidays like Christmas Eve and Christmas Day,” The Telegraph reported today.
The Communist Youth League at Shenyang Pharmaceutical University published a notice prohibiting student associations, the students’ union, and the divisions of the youth league from holding Christmas celebrations. The league alleged that the purpose of the notice was to “guide the youth league members in building cultural confidence and resisting the corrosion caused by Western religious culture.”
As the Chinese Communist Party places increasing emphasis on unifying ideology around its own power, it has clamped down on religions from other countries, which it views as a targeted, foreign attack against its rule.
