(Chengdu, Sichuan—Jan. 14, 2019) Officials in China’s southwestern Sichuan province raided Fountain of Life Church on Thursday, declaring that it is illegal and triggering fears that it might be closed down.
The church was holding a Bible study when law enforcement authorities and personnel from the Chengdu’s civil affairs bureau, ethnic and religious affairs bureau, and cultural department entered the church and said that it “is not allowed to illegally organize religious events.”
Zha Changping, one of the church’s elders, fears officials might forcibly close the church. It has already been investigated, and some books have been confiscated.
In China, churches are considered illegal if they do not register with the government and submit to its monitoring.
