(Guangzhou—April 23, 2020) Guangzhou authorities have denied church elder Chen Chengwan a residential permit due to his church affiliation.
Chen, who is an elder of Baihua Hall, which has connections to the persecuted Guangfu Church, was not originally born in Guangzhou. As a result, he has been made to apply for a renewal of his residence permit every year. However, because he serves at a church that has not registered with the government, officials have denied him the renewal several times.
On April 9, unidentified individuals came to Chen’s door and knocked on it, claiming to be in charge of rental housing. They said they were checking on the residents and needed to speak with him. He told them he couldn’t meet with them at that moment. In addition, he said he couldn’t let them in because his children were doing their schooling online.
During the conflict, the visitors continued to bang on the door and even brought the landlord over. When it was over, they left instead of visiting the other apartments.
Later, the housing management center said it was not their staff members and suggested that it might be the housing management center in Taihe Town.
He has complained to the Guangzhou Municipal Government Service Center, saying government agents were the ones who harassed him.
