(London – March 24, 2011) One of the Western world’s most outspoken critics of China’s one-child policy spoke to British members of parliament in London on Wednesday about the horrific consequences of this benign-sounding policy.
Reggie Littlejohn, president of Women’s Rights Without Frontiers, spoke to the All-Party Parliamentary Working Group on Human Dignity at Westminster. She was introduced by the well-known human rights champion Lord David Alton, who opposes abortion. On Tuesday, Littlejohn, who is also ChinaAid’s expert on the one-child policy, spoke to the European Union’ Dignitatis Humanae Institute on the same topic, “Coerced Abortion in ‘Sexual and Reproductive Rights’ in China.”
“The women of China have had perhaps their most fundamental sexual and reproductive right stripped away: the right to bear children,” she said.
Littlejohn drove home her point with both startling and alarming statistics and heartrending stories.
Among the statistics are that China’s one-child policy has resulted in 100 million missing women and girls, who were the victims of gendercide, and that China has the highest female suicide rate in the world.
“According to the World Health Organization, 500 women end their lives every day in China. I don’t think that the despair that leads to suicide is unrelated to the coercive enforcement of the one-child policy,” Littlejohn said.
She also told the story of Liu Dan, a 21-year-old mother who was nine months pregnant when family planning officials dragged her into a family planning center and forcibly aborted her full-term baby, fully aware that she had high blood pressure and the procedure would be dangerous for her. Her fiancé found her after the abortion unconscious and bleeding from her eyes, nose and mouth, but family planning officials refused to get medical help until her family insisted. But when help came, it was too late. That day, both mother and child died.
“I believe that forced abortion as it is practiced in China is official government rape,” Littlejohn said. “A victim of forced abortion, like a victim of rape, is traumatized physically, emotionally and spiritually. She will never be the same again.”
She said, “The coercive enforcement of China’s one-child policy causes more violence against women and girls than any other official policy on earth. It is the largest women’s rights issue in the world today …. In China, a woman’s body is not her own It belongs to the state. A woman’s womb is the most intimate part of her body – physically, emotionally and spiritually. For the Chinese Communist Party to force its bloody hand right into a woman’s womb and crush the life inside her is a heinous crime against humanity.”
This is an extremely powerful talk by Reggie Littlejohn, President of Women’s Rights without frontiers. This is a coalition to combat forced abortion and sexual slavery in China.
