CSCL Asks Chinese Premier to Investigate Xu Zhiyong's Case

China Aid Association

(BEIJING–August 21, 2009) ChinaAid learned on Friday, August 21, 2009, that members of the Committee to Support Chinese Lawyers called on the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao to investigate the detention of Xu Zhiyong. In their letter, the CSCL demanded an investigation into the tax charges and unwarranted detention, calling for Xu’s lawful release.
On August 13, Dr. Xu Zhiyong was formally arrested on the charge of “tax evasion,” after having been taken away from his home and detained at the No. 1 Beijing Detention Center on July 29. Dr. Xu is the founder and President of Open Constitution Initiative, a well known NGO promoting rule of law in China.
In light of the arrest, the HRIC and Amnesty International each issued public statements on August 18, 2009, condemning the Xu’s arrest and the forced closure of Open Constitution Initiative. See Amnesty’s and HRIC’s Statements.
[UPDATED]: On Sunday, August 23, Dr. Xu was released on bail. He is currently awaiting his trial in Beijing.
ChinaAid applauds the CSCL and other organizations’ efforts to promote rule of law in Dr. Xu Zhiyong’s case. We urge our brothers and sisters to pray for truth and for the preservation of human rights in China. ChinaAid echos the demands of CSCL and calls for the immediate release of Xu Zhiyong and the restoration of Open Constitution Initiative.
