(Washington—Oct. 27, 2013) The U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs’ Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations will hold an open hearing, the subject of which is “Guo Feixiong and Freedom of Expression in China,” at 2:30 p.m. EDT, Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013.
At the hearing, Bob Fu, founder and President of ChinaAid, Zhang Qing, Guo’s wife, and “Sara” Yang Tianjiao, Guo’s daughter, will testify in hopes of having the committee release a statement in support of Guo and his innocence. Fu, Zhang and Yang also hope to have the appropriate government agencies negotiate Guo’s release with the Chinese government.
The hearing can be viewed live on the Committee’s website, www.foreignaffairs.house.gov, according to subcommittee chair Christopher H. Smith, (R-NJ).

Prominent attendees include Joe Torres, chairman of the board of ChinaAid; Rev. Daniel Stephens, senior pastor at Midcities Community Church; and Rev. Chad Bullard, former Homeland Security Department official and Stonegate Fellowship pastor, all from Midland, Texas. These three attendees will also speak in front of the subcommittee.

A press conference will precede the hearing at 1:45 p.m. Both the press conference and the congressional hearing will be held in Room 225 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

Guo, a prominent Chinese human rights defender, was detained on Aug. 8 following a speech he made in early 2013 at a public protest of the government censorship encountered by Chinese newspaper The Southern Weekly.

ChinaAid has previously reported on the persecution encountered by Guo:

After the subcommittee hearing, Senator John Cornyn, (R-TX), will meet with the witnesses.
