(Beijing- June 19, 2008) CAA has learned that House Church Alliance leader, Zhang “Bike” Mingxuan and his interpreter, Ms. Ou Yang, were released from detention on Thursday, at approximately 7:35pm Beijing time. Zhang and Ou have been held for the past 31 hours, by PSB officials at the Shuangyushu PSB office of Haidian District, Beijing city. The pair was detained at a bus station while on their way to meet with Dr. Bastiaan Belder (MEP), Rapporteur of the EP  Committee of Foreign Affairs for the relationship between the EU and China,  at Yanshan Hotel in Haidian District. Neither experienced any physical harm from the police.

Both Zhang and Ou want to express their deepest gratitude to all who have been working tirelessly in the past two days fro their release. According to Zhang’s son, Zhang Chuang, family memebers were filled with joy when they heard the news of the release. This is yet another example that the international community’s persistent pressure on the Chinese Government can result in resounding victory for those who are abused by corrupt officials. CAA would like to thank the efficient and timely effort by the EU and EUP for their help in this case.
CAA also asks the international community to continue to pray and advocate for Zhang and his family as Zhang’s landlord, under Government pressure, has sent an eviction notice to his family to move out by the end of the week. This unrelenting persecution of Bike Zhang and his family and friends is part of the CPC’s overall strategy of eradicating the unstable and dangerous, “religious elements” before the start of the Olympic Games on August 8. China’s horrendous human rights record along with the steady increase of persecution against thousands of its own people is more than enough for the world to speak out against this government during the Olympic Games.
To show your solidarity and support for those who are suffering in China, please order your own “Pray for China” prayer bands before the start of the Olympic Games.
Issued by CAA June 19, 2008
