(Jiaozuo, Henan—Aug. 26, 2019) Officials from China’s central Henan province arrested Christian human rights activist Li Yufeng just four months after she was released from prison. At the time, Li was filing an appeal at a court in Beijing.
Li’s sister said that last month, Li went to the Henan Provincial Court in Beijing to appeal a few grievances, after having completed four-year and two-year prison sentences earlier. As she was leaving the court, plainclothes police officers from Jiaozuo, Henan, seized her and returned her to her hometown, where she was criminally detained. On Aug. 8, the authorities arrested her on a “provoking troubles” charge.
In March, Li was released from her four-year prison sentence, which was also for allegedly “provoking troubles.” During her time behind bars, she suffered heart problems. Li previously served a two-year prison sentence on a falsified charge of “obstruction of official business.” When she sued the local government after being released, she was sentenced to one-and-a-half years of labor.
In 1990, she also went to court against the government after officials demolished her house twice. Even though she won that case, the decided upon reparative measures were never implemented.
