(Chengdu, Sichuan—Feb. 20, 2018) Sichuan officials interrogated and threatened to kill family members of incarcerated Christians for seeking the help of German diplomats on behalf of their loved ones.

The attack on Early Rain Covenant Church, which was under steady persecution in 2018, culminated in the mass arrest in more than 150 of the church’s leaders and members during the week of Dec. 9. Among those still in custody are elders Su Bingsen and Tan Defu and Christians Dai Zhichao and Li Xiaofeng.

On Feb. 14, Su’s wife, Xu Miaozhuang, Tan’s wife, Xiao Hongliu, Dai’s wife, Lu Lingzhi, and Li’s husband, Shen Bing, met with representatives of the German consulate in Chengdu. The next day, the authorities summoned them for interrogation and tried to pry details about their meetings with the German diplomats from them, including who they met with, who connected them to the consulate, and whether or not they were provided with assistance. The authorities accused them of continuing to conduct

Zhou Jiao, an official from the Chengdu Municipal Public Security Bureau, told the Christian women that they were “scum” and “should not live in this world.” He also said, “I wish it were 40 years earlier so that I could put [KKK-like] hats on Christians and decapitate them” and “I will kill you all sooner or later.”

The family members were all released on Saturday morning.

Currently, more than 10 Early Rain Covenant Church members are still under criminal detention on various charges.
