(Mianyang, Sichuan—June 29, 2018) The mother of Huang Qi, a human rights activist dying in prison, told Radio Free Asia recently that the charges against her son have been fabricated.

The woman in question, Pu Wenqing, said she had evidence to back-up her claim. Authorities charged Huang with “illegally supplying state secrets overseas” in December 2016, stating that he had leaked secret document to overseas forces. However, Pu said the document came from a local neighborhood committee instead of a government department trusted with state secrets. As a result, it is unlikely that he shared a secret document.

In mid-June, his lawyers received a court summons for his trial, which was to take place on June 20. However, officials canceled it on short notice and offered no explanation, and his lawyers have had no updates. According to Huang’s friend, Wei Xiaobing, he assisted so many with their cases that more than 100 of them had made plans to attend his court hearing.

Meanwhile, Huang languishes dangerously close to death in prison, and multiple requests that he be released on medical parole have been denied.

ChinaAid exposes abuses, such as those suffered by Huang, in order to stand in solidarity with persecuted Christians and promote religious freedom, human rights, and rule of law.
