|Christians cling to a church
cross as authorities try to
(Shangrao, Jiangxi—Aug. 4, 2017) Officials in China’s coastal Jiangxi province forcibly removed a cross from a church that is still under construction yesterday morning, continuing an escalating trend of persecution in the area.
At 8:00 a.m. on Aug. 3, government personnel arrived at a church’s construction site in Shangrao, Jiangxi and dismantled its cross. According to local reports, more than 10 church crosses in Jiangxi have already been removed.
This violation of religious freedom echoes a previous cross demolition campaign that swept Zhejiang province, affecting most of the churches in that area. Many Christians who tried to protest the movement were taken into police custody.
