Lawyer detained, denied contact

(Nanning, Guangxi—Nov. 8, 2019) Authorities in China’s Guangxi province detained a human rights lawyer on Oct. 31. After being placed behind bars, the lawyer was not allowed to contact his family or meet with an attorney.

The detained, Qin Yongpei, had been involved with several cases considered “sensitive” by the Chinese government.

Officials seized him on an “inciting subversion of state power” charge on Oct. 31. This past weekend, his parents received a notice saying he had been criminally detained.

Since he was taken into custody, Qin has not been allowed to contact his family or meet with his defense attorney.
