(Beijing—March 17, 2019) Since March 2, the wife of a renowned Chinese human rights lawyer has been under continuous surveillance as part of increased monitoring during the meetings of China’s two major political bodies, collectively known as the Two Sessions.
Whenever Xu Yan, the wife of lawyer Yu Wensheng, leaves her home, police and state security officers videotape, push, and bully her. A report received by ChinaAid states that she is feeling “helpless” and that officials even locked her in her home on March 7.
“The situation was very awful a few days ago, because they were not only rude, but they were also a mob,” Xu said.
Xu does not know whether or not the officers will leave after the Two Sessions.
Yu was taken into police custody on Jan. 19, 2018, as he dropped his child off at school and formally arrested on April 19 on disruption of public services and subversion charges. At the time of his arrest, he was representing Wang Quanzhang, a lawyer imprisoned during a nationwide crackdown on human rights attorneys.
The Two Sessions consists of meetings of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and the National People’s Congress (NPC) and constitutes the largest group of domestic political meetings all year. During this year’s Two Sessions, China has closely monitored people who dissent with the government in the name of state security, even if their dissent is peaceful.
