(Chengdu, Sichuan—April 1, 2020) A photo of imprisoned Chengdu church pastor Wang Yi circulated the web last week.

In it, Wang appeared emaciated, but, according to the 1989 Tiananmen Square leader Zhou Fengsuo, his eyes displayed calm perseverance. This is the first known photograph of Wang since he was arrested on Dec. 9, 2018, along with about 100 of his church members.

Most of the Christians have been released, but Wang is serving a nine-year sentence for “inciting subversion of state power” and conducting “illegal business operations.” Officials accused him of these crimes because of his ministry and opposition to the rule of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Police are currently surveilling Wang’s wife, Jiang Rong, and their son. In addition, Wang’s parents’ home is closely watched by the authorities.
