Potential diplomatic boycott of Beijing Olympics after US-China talks

(ChinaAid, Midland, TX) The Biden Administration may plan to diplomatically boycott the Beijing Olympics, according to sources for the Washington Post. Plans for a boycott emerged shortly after President Biden and Xi held a virtual conference. White House sources confirm the two instances are unrelated.

On Monday, President Joe Biden and Xi Jinping spoke for 3 1/2 hours with the hopes of relieving tensions between the two world superpowers. The two leaders touched on a variety of topics, as outlined by the White House press release

Biden assured his opposition to “unilateral efforts to change the status quo or undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.” Meanwhile, President Xi and the Global Times warned the US about “playing with fire” in regards to Taiwanese independence.  Biden addressed the Xinjiang region, where millions of Uyghurs, Turks, and Kazakhs are kept in concentration camps.

Their meeting led to no diplomatic breakthroughs, but some experts believe the conversations were beneficial to repairing the US-China relationship.

Regardless, the Beijing Olympics were never a topic of conversation according to the Washington Post. Sources from the Post, however, alluded that the Biden administration plans to diplomatically boycott the games, independent of the virtual conference. US athletes will still participate in the games but without the presence of Joe Biden and other US leaders.
