Prominent human rights lawyer criminally detained, father disappeared

(Wenzhou, Zhejiang—Feb. 27, 2016) China Aid learned that prominent human rights lawyer Zhang Kai was placed under criminal detention at 9 p.m. yesterday after serving six months in “residential surveillance in a designated location,” otherwise known as a “black jail.” Additionally, authorities summoned Zhang’s father to the Wenzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau (PSB) yesterday morning, and he has not been seen since. It is presumed that the elder Zhang is being forcibly held by the Wenzhou PSB.

China Aid will continue to report new information as it becomes available.

China Aid reports on cases like Zhang Kai in order to expose abuses perpetrated by the Chinese government in order to advance religious freedom and rule of law in China.
