(Midland, Texas–June 13, 2012) ChinaAid has joined other religious liberty organizations united under the Religious Liberty Partnership in a statement on religious freedom in Sri Lanka that calls for the official recognition of Sri Lanka’s evangelical community as represented by the National Christian Evangelical Alliance of Sri Lanka.
ChinaAid is a founding member of the Religious Liberty Partnership, which issued the Colombo Statement that calls on the worldwide church to pray “against the continued violent attacks on clergy and places of Christian worship,” and for “all religious communities [to] enjoy the Constitutional guarantees on religious freedom.” The statement is available at the organization’s website: www.RLPartnership.org.
“This statement is significant as it is an expression of concern by the global Christian community on issues of rights, justice and equality of all citizens of Sri Lanka,” says Godfrey Yogarajah, Executive Director of the World Evangelical Alliance’s Religious Liberty Commission. The National Christian Evangelical Alliance of Sri Lanka is part of the World Evangelical Alliance.
The Colombo Statement says the Religious Liberty Partnership is committed “to work toward the full realization of the religious rights of all Sri Lankans,” and “to stand in solidarity with the evangelical Christian community as they seek to have equal rights alongside other religious constituencies in Sri Lanka.”
Yogarajah, also a leader of the National Christian Evangelical Alliance of Sri Lanka, says that the statement is designed to ignite action. “We pray that this united global voice will encourage the government of Sri Lanka and others concerned to effect changes that will promote freedom of thought, conscience, religion and belief in Sri Lanka,” he said.
The Religious Liberty Partnership is a collaborative effort of Christian organizations from more than 20 countries focused on religious liberty. It seeks to work together with more intentionality on advocacy and assistance and in raising the awareness of religious liberty issues globally.
