(Linyi, Shandong—March 13, 2020) Jailed human rights lawyer Wang Quanzhang is set to be released next month. However, as the coronavirus rages, his family has not been able to visit him.

Wang Quanzhang has been behind bars since 2015, when he vanished as part of a crackdown on human rights attorneys. For three years, no one knew his whereabouts. After he resurfaced, he was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison. He was also deprived of political rights for five years for supposedly “inciting subversion of state power.”

He will be released next month.

However, because of the ongoing coronavirus, his family has been unable to see him. Since March 1, Wang’s wife, Li Wenzu, has been asking the prison to allow Wang to call her, but her request has not been approved.

Wang was permitted to call his mother, but they could only speak for three minutes before the line got cut off.
