The sign on this bus reads “The intrauterine
operation killed Wang Wenbo.”

On Aug. 22, Wang Wenbo, 30, from the village of Guanqiao in Tengzhou city, Dongzheng county, Shandong Province died as a result of a required intrauterine device (IUD) placement. The birth control was ordered by the sorority director of the Family Planning Office in Guanqiao. After Wang’s death, her family called the police. A preliminary autopsy, conducted at the People’s Hostpital, ruled out homicide and suicide as causes of death.

As one source said, the local policy is that women are required to have an IUD placed after their first pregnancy and if a second pregnancy occurs, women are required to undergo tubal ligation.

According to family friends who took to the Internet via Tianya Forum and a Shandong online post bar called “Baidu,” Wang left behind a seven-month-old son.
