(Chengdu, Sichuan—May 13, 2019) A member of a continuously persecuted church in Chengdu, the capital of China’s Sichuan province, noticed malicious messages on the wall of his home.

The Christian said he went outside at about 1:00 a.m. on April 27 to check the electric meter after noticing the electricity had shut off. There, he discovered that the electric box was no longer there, and one of his locks had been covered with an adhesive. On the walls, someone had spray painted the words “pay off the debt” and “kill people.”

Even though the Christian said the complex in which his home is located is locked every day at 12:00 a.m., he heard the door being opened when he went to check the meter. The security guards on shift denied any knowledge of the events.

Alarmed, the church member reported the incident to the police, but the officer answering the call unexpectedly asked him to go to the police station. The Christian refused, and half an hour later, two local officers responded to the call, but they didn’t offer any solutions. The church member called the emergency number again, but the authorities did not take further action.

Early Rain Covenant Church was intensely persecuted throughout 2018, culminating in the mass seizure of more than 150 of its members within a week last December. Most of them were taken into custody in a single night, and a few are being held on falsified criminal charges.

The church’s pastor, Wang Yi, and his wife, Jiang Rong, have been missing since the officials seized them in the December crackdown.
