(Washington, D.C.) The Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission will hold a hearing on May 12 at 10:30 AM Eastern Standard Time on forced organ harvesting in China. Witnesses include Dr. Enver Tohti Bugha who was ordered to carry out one of the first document cases of live organ harvesting. The hearing will be held virtually and hosted by Commission Co-Chairs Rep. Chris Smith and Rep. James P. McGovern.
Forced organ harvesting has been a well-documented atrocity. The Independent Tribunal into Forced Organ Harvesting from Prisoners of Conscience in China Tribunal ruled in 2020 that the Chinese government was culpable in harvesting organs from live participants, mostly Falun Gong practitioners. Other religious minorities may also fall victim to this practice, including Christians and Uyghur Muslims. Instead of having organs volunteered, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) matches organs with prisoners. Falun Gong practitioners eat a healthy diet and do not drink alcohol, which made them a primary focus of the CCP.
