U.S., China Talk Human Rights – May 13-14

May 17, 2010
WASHINGTON, D.C.–On Thursday and Friday, representatives of the U.S. and China met to discuss human rights after more than two years of tense silence. Officials kept quiet about the results of the talks, and no political prisoners were released prior to or during the Human Rights Dialogue, differing from the Chinese governments pattern in earlier talks. The tone of the talks rested on a rhetoric of equality, with U.S. delegates acknowledging the U.S. and the People’s Republic of China as mutual partners and equal powers. Despite the pivotal import of the human rights talks, tangible results remain elusive. It remains to be seen as to whether the discussions in fact positively affect human rights in China.
