(Wenzhou,
Zhejiang—Sept. 3, 2015) Authorities in Zhejiang issued Yan Xiaojie’s family a
notice on Sept. 3 stating that they commuted his eight-day administrative
detention sentence to criminal detention because they suspect him of “gathering
a mob to disturb public order.”
Wenzhou
police apprehended Yan on Aug. 26 for forwarding seven text messages on the
Chinese messaging app WeChat that requested prayer concerning the Zhejiang
cross removals. Originally, they scheduled his release for Sept. 4. They have
not specified how much longer they will detain him under this new sentence.
The
notice received by the family can be read in full below.
