(Shaoxing, Zhejiang—Nov. 14, 2016) Government officials closed a house church in China’s coastal Zhejiang province on Sept. 29, attesting it held religious activities in an unregistered venue.
The owners of the fourth and fifth floors of a business center in Shaoxing, Zhejiang received a notice from the authorities on Sept. 29, alleging that their building was unregistered and ordered them to immediately stop all religious activities.
When a China Aid reporter attempted to contact the local government office, he was told to call back after China’s National Day, which is Oct. 1.
In 2014, Zhejiang began cracking down on churches throughout the province via a beautification campaign known as “Three Rectifications and One Demolition.” The campaign specifically targeted churches, tearing down crosses and sometimes destroying buildings. One Christian in Wenzhou, a city known as “China’s Jerusalem,” reported that the area their church was in had been relatively untouched by the campaign. Otherwise, it rampaged the province.
China Aid reports on abuses, such as those suffered by churches in Zhejiang, in order to stand in solidarity with persecuted Christians and promote religious freedom in China.
