(Washington, D.C.—Jan. 1, 2020) U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made a strong statement yesterday on the jailing of Chinese Pastor Wang Yi.
On Monday, Wang was found guilty of “illegal business operations” and “inciting subversion of state power.” He received these charges because of his pastoring of Early Rain Covenant Church in Chengdu, Sichuan.
He has been behind bars since Dec. 9, 2018, when around 100 members of his church were taken into custody.
Upon hearing of Wang’s sentence, ChinaAid President and Founder Dr. Bob Fu contacted Pompeo and asked him to make a public statement. The Secretary of State responded on Twitter, saying:
I am alarmed that Pastor Wang Yi, leader of Chengdu’s Early Rain house church, was tried in secret and sentenced to nine years in prison on trumped-up charges. Beijing must release him and end its intensifying repression of Christians and members of all other religious groups.— Secretary Pompeo (@SecPompeo) December 31, 2019
