Letters To Prisoners
Why Write?
Writing letters sends hope to prisoners of conscience and signals to prison officials that there are people all over the world who are invested in the safety and well-being of these unjustly imprisoned Chinese citizens.
Authorities will notice any letters of support and there are many cases where guards treat prisoners better due to receiving letters.
How to Write?
1) Do NOT mention ChinaAid, a church, or any other organization. If officials see names of entities, the prisoners could be punished due to a connection with a ‘foreign organization.’ There is no danger for a prisoner to receive a letter from an individual.
2) No printed Scripture verses. Printed Scripture verses will impede delivery. Please only hand-write Scripture on your cards & notes.
2) Write in English or Mandarin. Even if the prisoner is not able to completely understand your message, just seeing someone take the time to write to them from a different country is a great encouragement.
3) Share positive comments. Do not write any negative comments, especially about the country, political system, authorities, or the prison. Feel free to incorporate Bible verses & spiritual encouragement.
4) No packages. Packages will be rejected.
5) Label your envelope. There is no issue with writing your name & return address. If you are more comfortable, just a name, state, and/or country is fine. Letters to prisoners are most effective when officials see mail from different areas.
6) Boldly address your envelope. Write or paste either the English or Chinese (or both) addresses. Clearly write the letter is going to China for international routing.
7) Use correct postage. Pricing for mailing letters depends on the weight, the carrier used, and where the item is being mailed from. The cheapest option from the United States in most cases is First Class International.

Beijing’s Zion Church, one of China’s largest unregistered house churches, was forcibly shut down in September 2018 after refusing state surveillance. It then faced mounting pressure until a sweeping October 2025 crackdown detained and criminally arrested at least 18 pastors and workers. Pastor Gong Shengliang, founder of the South China China, is serving a 19-year prison sentence, after a commutation of a life sentence occurred in 2006. Gong was originally sentenced to death.
Latest Update: According to a report by Rights Defense Network on May 1, 2025, Gong Shengliang—who had previously been sentenced to life imprisonment—was released from prison in October 2024. However, he was immediately placed under secret residential surveillance at a private home in Zaoyang City, Hubei Province, where designated personnel have been guarding him, prohibiting him from going out or receiving visitors. He has still not been allowed to return home.

Ji Xiaolong, a Shanghai activist, was sentenced to 4.5 years for protesting COVID lockdowns and appealing the verdict. He alleged abuse in detention and lack of evidence.
