HENAN — On September 22, 2010, at 4 p.m. local time, a Bible study and training session at Chen Pengyi Church in Wancheng District, Nanyang City, Henan province was raided by local police. An American pastor, a Russian pastor and over 30 attendees, including local co-workers Zhang Tianling, Ma Hanzhong, Yan Baozhong, Kang Jinqun and Ma Wenzhi were detained. Zhang Tianling’s car was also confiscated.
In other news, Christian detainee Zheng Yumei from Tianmiao Town, Yucheng County of Henan has fallen seriously ill, but the Center for Re-education through Labor where she is being held refuses to provide medical treatment for her, and instead demands that her family provide for her medical expenses. She is currently imprisoned at the Shibahe Women’s Center for Re-education through Labor of Zhengzhou Municipality, Henan province, in the No. 4 Brigade. To contact the center and to advocate on Zheng’s behalf, call +03 716 680 2246, and ask to speak with Meng, the director.
ChinaAid is concerned that the international community may have been misguided by the Chinese government’s policies issued last August regarding religious freedom. Although religious prosperity was promised, the government has launched another round of persecution against churches in China.
The President of ChinaAid, Bob Fu, and ChinaAid staff members pray for special blessings from Christ upon those Christians who are behind bars and persecuted during this season, the time of the traditional Chinese Mid-Autumn Moon Cake Festival. ChinaAid also requests that Christians in China and worldwide urgently pray for the persecuted.
