(Amsterdam—May 28, 2019) Dutch officials recently granted a persecuted Chinese human rights activist asylum after human rights organizations worked for her release from immigration detention.
Chen Yan, a Chinese Christian and human rights proponent, was taken into immigration custody in the Netherlands last month. The Dutch government initially denied her asylum case, but because she fled China in 2017 due to escalating persecution against herself and her friends and has not stopped advocating for Chinese human rights since arriving in the Netherlands, she feared her life would be in grave danger if she was deported. Upon hearing this, ChinaAid and other human rights activists began working for her release.
Immigration authorities released Chen earlier this month and allowed her to proceed with her asylum case. On May 4, Chen had a meeting with the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND), where she presented her case once again, and ChinaAid recently learned that Dutch authorities had granted her asylum.
Chen was previously a member of the Rose Team, an online Chinese group that advocated for human rights, and she defended civil liberties online. The Chinese Communist Party cracked down on the group, and many of the members were harassed for their activities.
