ChinaAid warmly welcomes the introduction of the “FREEDOM for Gao Zhisheng Act” (HR 5303) by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), joined by Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) and Rep. John Moolenaar (R-MI). The bipartisan legislation requires the U.S. government to adopt a coordinated strategy to secure the release of Chinese human rights defenders and political prisoners, including the renowned lawyer Gao Zhisheng, who has been disappeared by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) since 2017.

The bill underscores America’s longstanding commitment to freedom and human dignity by elevating the plight of Gao Zhisheng, Jimmy Lai, and countless others unjustly detained for their faith, conscience, and peaceful advocacy.

ChinaAid Statement

“ChinaAid commends Congressman Chris Smith for his unwavering leadership in standing with Gao Zhisheng and other courageous prisoners of conscience in China and Hong Kong. For nearly two decades, Gao has embodied the highest ideals of justice, faith, and sacrifice—suffering imprisonment, torture, and enforced disappearance for defending the vulnerable. This legislation represents a vital step to ensure his case and the plight of so many others are never forgotten,” said Dr. Bob Fu, Founder and President of ChinaAid.

Dr. Fu added:

“I have been privileged to call Gao Zhisheng a dear friend. In 2009, we were able to rescue his wife and children to safety in the United States, but Gao himself has remained in the CCP’s grip—silenced, tortured, and disappeared. For years, we have prayed, spoken, and worked tirelessly for his freedom. The FREEDOM for Gao Zhisheng Act renews international resolve to hold the Chinese regime accountable and to bring Gao, Jimmy Lai, and countless other prisoners of conscience one step closer to freedom. ChinaAid stands ready to amplify this call until they are released.”

ChinaAid urges the U.S. Congress to swiftly pass the FREEDOM for Gao Zhisheng Act and calls on the international community to join in pressing for the immediate release of all political and religious prisoners in China and Hong Kong.
