ChinaAid’s Call: Commemorating the 36th Anniversary of June 4th (Tiananmen Square Massacre) from the Perspective of Human Rights and Religious Freedom

(USA – June 4, 2025) On June 4, 2025, we once again join together in remembering the tragedy that unfolded in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square in 1989. Thirty-six years ago on this day, the Chinese government used military force to suppress students and citizens engaged in peaceful demonstrations, resulting in the loss of countless lives and a major setback for human rights in China.

This tragedy is not only a deep scar in the collective memory of the Chinese people, but also one that has had far-reaching impacts on the global pursuit of human rights and religious freedom. To this day, the truth of what happened remains obscured, many victims and their families are still seeking justice, and China’s human rights and religious freedom continue to face serious challenges.

Proverbs 31:8 reminds us to:

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.”

This call encourages us to remember history under the principles of human rights and religious freedom and to speak out for those who have no voice. As ChinaAid, we believe that commemorating June 4th is not only a tribute to the past but a continuing call to speak for justice and freedom for present and future generations.

We call on the global public to participate in the following ways:

1. Participate in Commemorative and Reflective Activities

By attending or organizing public memorial events, prayer vigils, or peaceful gatherings, we can collectively remember history and preserve the truth. These events can include scripture readings, prayers for China, or listening to testimonies from survivors and advocates, bearing witness to faith and the value of freedom. Examples include church prayer meetings, candlelight vigils, or themed discussion events—peaceful and meaningful ways to honor the anniversary.

2. Share and Engage on Social Media

Use social media platforms to share related images, messages, personal stories, or historical reflections to raise awareness and promote a clearer understanding of what happened. Using hashtags such as #8964Memorial, #Tiananmen36, and #RememberJune4th can help connect people around the world. This is also an opportunity to draw connections between the spirit of 1989 and today’s human rights and religious freedom issues—such as the persecution of Christians, Uyghurs, and other groups—sparking deeper public reflection.

3. Support Humanitarian Care and Public Awareness

You can express concern to your government and legislative bodies, encouraging continued international advocacy on human rights and religious freedom. Supporting international human rights organizations that provide humanitarian aid to prisoners of conscience is another meaningful way to show care. ChinaAid remains committed to helping persecuted Christians, Uyghurs, and other vulnerable groups. We also encourage schools, educators, and media outlets to responsibly teach and report on this history, ensuring the memory of June 4th is preserved and not forgotten.

Hebrews 13:3 reminds us:

“Remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison.”

This conviction inspires us to continue working for justice and freedom, grounded in peace and understanding.

ChinaAid calls on the global community to jointly commemorate the 36th anniversary of June 4th and to remain engaged in the cause of human rights and religious freedom in China. Your participation and your voice are forces for change.
