(Chengdu, Sichuan Province – December 4, 2023) Recently, Jia Xuewei, deacon of Chengdu Early Rain Covenant Church, filed a complaint with Qingyang Sub-bureau of Chengdu Public Security Bureau about being beaten and suffering a broken rib by a national security agent of Qingyang Sub-bureau. Subsequently, he submitted supplementary complaint materials to police officer Mr. Peng.

Jia Xuewei participated in the graduation ceremony of the “Worker’s College” held by the church at the end of October. He was taken to Chengdu Public Security Bureau Qingyang District Sub-bureau by the police. During the interrogation, a national security agent dragged him to the restroom and physically assaulted him, and insulted him using obscene languages. The national security agent behaved as if he had entered a state of madness. The beating was extremely brutal, only subsiding after the intervention of other police officers. On the same day, Preacher Ding Shuqi, when taken away by the police, also experienced violent dragging and beating.

On the afternoon of October 30, Jia Xuewei went to the hospital for a CT scan. According to the results, the doctor diagnosed a fracture of the second rib on the left side, requiring a fixed band for two to three weeks, avoiding strenuous exercise to prevent displacement of the fracture. Jia Xuewei later stated that in addition to medical treatment, he would contact a lawyer to hold the assailant accountable through legal procedure.

After Jia Xuewei was released, his landlord immediately faced pressure from the police and he was forced to move out. In addition, Preacher Ding Shuqi’s family had their water supply cut off. The landlord of deacon Xiao Luobiao and the landlord Shu Qiong and her husband of Wang Song and, all faced police’s pressure, demanding the landlords to terminate their contracts with them. On November 27, Shu Qiong’s landlord called her, asking her and her family to move out by December 5.

Shu Qiong’s response was

“If you are sure you want to terminate the lease, please arrange the time to sign the termination agreement yourselves. We can only start counting the fifteen days for moving from the day the agreement is signed. After all, you are the ones breaking the lease. We are not sure if you really want to terminate the lease just based on your oral statement. The time to move needs to be calculated fifteen days from the agreement signing date.”

Shu Qiong also preached the Gospel to the landlord.

Early Rain Covenant Church’s thanksgiving event on the evening of November 23 and the Sunday worship on November 25 were once again disrupted by the police.
