On February 1, Dr. Jim Garlow, founder of Well Versed, conducted an interview with Dr. Bob Fu, who recounted his escape from China and offered insights into China’s policies, communism, and the severe persecution faced by Chinese Christians.
As a leader in the student democracy movement at Tiananmen Square, Dr. Bob Fu provided a firsthand account of the Chinese Communist Party’s violent suppression of peaceful demonstrations and the severe interrogations he endured as a result of his involvement. These experiences led him to lose confidence in the political system, and during this period, his heart was powerfully transformed by the Lord. In the interview with Dr. Jim Garlow, he explains that the gospel “turned his life completely upside down.”
Dr. Fu subsequently became a leader within China’s house church movement until he and his wife, Heidi, were charged and imprisoned for “illegal evangelism” for operating an underground Bible school. After fleeing China and resettling in the United States, Dr. Fu founded ChinaAid Association in 2002, an international nonprofit Christian human rights organization dedicated to advancing religious freedom and the rule of law in China.
Dr. Bob Fu went on to expose how Chinese authorities manipulate and abuse legal frameworks to criminalize ordinary Christian practices, such as the collection of offerings, and utilize vague charges as tools of persecution. He draws attention to the suffering and imprisonment of courageous individuals, including Wang Yi of Early Rain Covenant Church, Yang Rongli and Yang Xiaoguang of Golden Lampstand Church, Ezra Jin Mingri of Zion Church, as well as John Cao and Gao Zhisheng. Their stories, moreover, bear witness to the steadfast faith and remarkable courage of churches in China, even amid severe and sustained crackdowns by the authorities.
The interview concludes with Bob Fu’s call for those in the free world to pray for their brothers and sisters in China. He emphasizes that the struggle is “not a battle of flesh and blood, but a spiritual battle.” He leaves Christians with a message of hope, affirming that the Church cannot be diminished by any political party, institution, or military power, and that the victory of the cross will ultimately prevail over all schemes of evil.
