March 9, authorities in China’s coastal Zhejiang province formally arrested a
pastor who peacefully opposed the forced demolitions of church crosses.
Chongzhu has been held under criminal detention since Feb. 5. His wife
reported that she recently received a notice that her husband had been
officially arrested on charges of “stealing, spying, buying, or illegally
providing state secrets or intelligence to entities outside China.” Christians
suspect this charge may be linked to Zhang’s meeting with a U.S. diplomat in
Shanghai last year.
