Chinese Mongolian Christian Alamusha is in critical condition after being severely beaten in prison

(Hohhot, Inner Mongolia – January 3, 2023) Alamus, whose Chinese name is Alamusha, is a Chinese Mongolian Christian who returned home during his university break to attend a classmate reunion when one of his classmates was getting beaten. He went with his classmate to check the situation, and a group altercation ensued. Alamusha did not participate in the fight, but he was inexplicably designated as the main offender and sentenced to 15 years for intentional injury. Alamusha has consistently contested the verdict and has suffered severe injuries due to the beatings of the prison guards. His aunt recorded a video exposing Alamusha’s situation, petitioning government officials, and seeking help from the public.

The video circulating on Chinese social media allegedly shows Alamusha’s aunt addressing government officials of the Xilingol League in Inner Mongolia. After verification, it has been confirmed that Alamusha’s aunt spoke in Mongolian, stating that he has been tortured in solitary confinement while at the Hohhot Prison for nearly two months, and his life is in imminent danger.

According to Alamusha’s aunt, he was beaten by police officer Nie Yonggang and a member of a gang, resulting in a perforated eardrum. When he filed a complaint against them to the prison authorities, he was thrown into solitary confinement. During this, he was given only a small piece of steamed bun and a tiny cup of water each day. He had his hands in shackles, was not allowed a blanket, and suffered severe frostbite on his feet. Only after writing a statement promising not to file further complaints was he returned to the regular prison area.

In light of what happened to him, Alamusha had previously filed another complaint with an inspector, but there was no investigation. Instead, they simply moved him to a different prison area. He has written numerous complaint letters which have gone unanswered.

In response to the strong insistence of Alamusha’s family on filing a complaint, the authorities conducted a symbolic investigation. They pressured  Alamusha and his family to withdraw the complaint, and upon refusal, they once again confined him to solitary confinement and subjected him to torture as retaliation.

“We are the most helpless herders, you all can’t bully people like this. A pitiful child cannot be like this right? You all can’t torture people to death!” “You all can’t torture the child to death, we request the Communist government to take this matter seriously.” Alamusha’s aunt said in the video.

Another source stated that the aunt, who recorded the video pleading for help for her nephew in prison, was at one point taken away by local state security police.

According to Du Wen, a former inmate and former deputy director of the Legal Counsel Office of Inner Mongolia was informed about the situation. After he was released following the completion of his sentence, revealed that the torture inflicted on Alamusha to force him to submit was far beyond what his aunt mentioned in the video. This informant stated that  Alamusha was honest, courageous, and spiritually resilient. During his prison sentence, he became a Christian through reading the Bible, Christian history, the history of Christian thought, and “God, Locke, and Equality.”

Alamusha is a 28-year-old Mongolian Christian from the Xilingol League of Inner Mongolia. He lost his father at an early age, and his mother left home leaving him to be raised by his grandmother. Alamusha pursued studies at the Shanghai Theater Academy. During his winter break in 2013, while attending a reunion with his classmates back home, he became unwittingly involved in a conflict. Despite not participating in the brawl, due to a lack of connections and being an orphan, he became the scapegoat and was wrongly designated as the main culprit, receiving a 15-year prison sentence.

Du Wen revealed that Alamusha was upright and strong-willed, protested the verdict, and refused to plead guilty. Alamusha’s lack of cooperation in pleading guilty to the crime is offensive to police officer Nie Yonggang as well as the infamous Hohhot No. 3 Prison.

It is reported that Alamusha is detained in a high-security prison in Hohhot, which is specifically designed to incarcerate duty-related crime offenders, death row inmates, those with suspended death sentences, and individuals involved in serious and major organized crime. Former inmate Du Wen stated that in this prison, “all laws have become ineffective.”
